Okay, so after that fiasco last week (Bran was still sulking), Adrian was making sure that the next place he found was devoid of anyone who might possibly be living in whatever area he decided to stake out for his own. That did put him a little closer to the onsen and the creepy mansion than he would have preferred, but he could cope with that if it didn't mean unhousing anyone who might live there. And having the grove in a long oval rather than a perfectly symmetric square or circle wasn't what he'd anticipated, but that was why he was doing this, right? Nothing ever went exactly the way you expected when you were dealing with nature, and the more surprises he figured out how to deal with now, the better he'd be equipped to handle them later, when it really mattered.

He didn't find another Douglas fir, but he did find a white oak, definitely over fifty years old considering the acorns he'd spotted. It was a grand stately dame, her canopy stretching out over much of the surrounding area.

"You're going to want to put the house somewhere far enough away that the roof doesn't constantly get hit with falling acorns," Boston warned.

"But if I do that, I'll lose the benefits of the shade," Adrian pointed out. Reasonably.

"Don't blame me the first time there's a major storm and your roof sounds like a drum solo," Boston sniffed. "Heart tree first?"

Adrian considered it and shook his head. "House first," he said. Not that he was nervous, even doing it for practice. "Let me have a few more days to get a feel for the land."

"You're not going to have that kind of time in Seattle," Boston reminded.

"And by then, I'll have had a dress rehearsal and will probably feel much better about the whole thing," he said. "Now, help me make sure we put this house where it should be."

From one of his bespelled pockets, he pulled out came out was a tiny wooden house, looking like the sort of thing one might see in hobby shops for model train enthusiasts. Adrian carried it carefully, like it was made of spun glass, holding it in front of him like a talisman as he began pacing the clearing again, talking to Boston all the while. While their conversation was entirely in English, it would have been incomprehensible for anyone else to follow just because so many of the words were missing. They had been working together forever and didn't even seem to use nouns anymore. When Adrian said, "We need the thing for the thing," Boston just nodded and asked " And the other thing?" while they ran their feet over the ground, stopping occasionally to tap down a root or rock that stuck up out of the soil.

They wandered around the clearing for about a half an hour, still muttering to one another. ("Do you have the--" "Yes, and also the--" "Excellent. Don't forget to." "I won't.") Finally, Adrian strode to the middle of the area he'd been walking around for the past half hour and placed his model house on the ground.

And then ran for his life.

He started running the second after he put it down, sprinting back to where Boston was crouched behind the great white oak like he'd just pulled a pin from a grenade. He dove behind the tree and as he did the little wooden house expanded with a sharp BANG!, going from a toy model to an actual wooden cottage in the time it took to blink. Adrian was beaming proudly as he pushed out of the branches he'd been hiding behind and took in the view of his home. "Perfect," he said, bounding up the front steps to his front porch. He pushed the wooden swing and examined several of the windows and ran his hand over the overhang's supporting columns. "Doesn't look like so much as a splinter or a crack from travel, either."

"Good," Boston said, swishing his tail. "Now can we get to work?"

"I was thinking of spending some time sitting on the porch and drinking some tea, and giving you a nice fish to celebrate, but if you'd rather we jump right to it..." Adrian teased.

"Now, now, let's not be too hasty," Boston backpedaled. "It's important for your magic that you take time and appreciate life's little comforts."

"Making excellent points as usual, Boston," Adrian said with a grin, taking a moment to look over the land and smile.

And back home, Nell's head came up while she was up checking out her beehives and she stopped dead in her tracks. Something had happened out in the woods. It didn't seem to be a bad thing, but it was a big shift.

She went into the greenhouse and put her hands in some of the Soulwood soil to see if she could get a sense of what was going on. It was out by that huge white oak, she could tell that much, but what it was... She couldn't quite put a finger on it.

She made a note to herself to go check it out.
